Let us think slightly outside the square? So many people think that they cannot get great results because their market and their website only caters to the local audience. Now other than the fact that you can advertise using Google Adwords, you can also get some great advertising for your website and your business using Google’s local business search system.
Let us say that you have a small business, let us say it is a local plumbing business. And your business is based in Bondi, Sydney Australia. What if you could have your advertising appear for nothing if someone typed in “plumbing services bondi” into Google – that would be excellent wouldn’t? Well, this is exactly what you can do with Google’s local business search function. Try this yourself for your business or website and see where you appear.
Then, visit : www.google.com/local/add to get started. You will need to create a Google account, but if you already have a blogger or Google Adwords account, this should be easy for you. Then simply follow the process of setting up your advertising. Remember to type in categories that relate to the website or business you are promoting. As you start typing, Google will give you a list of categories and you can select up to 5 categories. This is what Google will use to determine whether to display your local business advertisement.
Also define your location accurately, as this will be the way the Google determines when it displays your advert. If, for the example I have given above, somone lives in New York for example, then obviously they are not going to see results for your business in Bondi. So that means you are only getting local people to the area in which you are based seeing your advert.
Remember, that you website or business will not appear for something generic like “plumbing services” for example – for this you will need Google Adwords, but it will appear for “plumbing services bondi”.
Here is an example of how my team used this to target advertising for another online store that we own. The website will is selling fitness equipment. So we set this up to target searches in the category of “Fitness Products”. So if you type in “Fitness Equipment Wollongong” (which is our local area), then our advert appears (highlighted in red below).

Now this will work whether you have a website or not. If you are in business and don’t yet have or even need a website, then this is great free advertising. If you a plumber for example, you can use this to get leads from people typing in “plumber (your location)” into Google. All the ad has to show is your phone number so the person can contact you.
